Today's Blog features a set of Photos done for the Web journal Quartier Hochelaga - http://www.quartierhochelaga.com/spectacle-de-noel-a-la-place-simon-valois/ - It is a part of a photo-journalistic coverage of a public event - Spectacle de Noël de la place Simon Valois - in Hochelaga Montreal.
We had many concerns for this shoot : difficult weather conditions (freezing rain, sleet, abundant snow, small spaces, numerous objects and obstacles), children running around (parents paranoid about photographers) cold hands, condensation on camera and so on. Public events are never easy and the Winter time events are even worse. Hence why our management of the shoot was that much more planned and defined. We needed specific results, specific subjects covered. 1st, we wanted to have Quebec Idol Émily Bégin, the show's star, up close, especially with a child (our second most important subject). As well, we needed to show Santa, the Christmas tree and the gift distribution to children. The show was organised by les Promenades Hochelaga who were QH's client ; we therefore needed to show the square and set up of the event and most importantly show images of the main sponsors, like in frame 4 of this blog.
We worked a specific post-production style in Photoshop for all frames of the series. It is a preset that we apply to all our portraits, it worked well with wide angles of the scene as well. We added a 25% black vignette to all but one frame. The portrait of Émily Bégin with a child in frame 5 of this Blog will go into our best of 2013 no doubt.
