Urban & SoulScape Expedition

Today's Blog features some images from our 'Le Bassin Olympique et un Circuit Historique' series for Montréal Métro.

The man made Notre-Dame Island in Montreal was the setting for this urbanscape photography shoot. The day I chose for the expedition was the perfect winter day, perfect light, perfect temperature. And it needed to be like this because this place is somewhat remote for an urban area. The island is in fact not very accessible on foot, especially in winter time with a foot of snow on the ground. Taking the foot walk to the back of the Island where the Olympic basin is situated is a true expedition due to several snow covered obstacles and absence of motor roads. Moreover, when you engage the the back of the basin, you are caught in a no-man's land between the Saint-Lawrence seaway and the 2000 meter basin. Getting to the other side to re-access the road and foot path served Saint-Hélène island, where the metro access is, is a dedicated expedition. It needed some preparation and some thought ; it was the best decision I took so far this winter ; I picked up some great images and I was graced with the softest sun I have experienced in a while. Rejuvenating and spiritual experience with myself and my art. The isolation and relative silence was surreal ; so was the Montreal casino and Biosphere in the setting sun. These are the kinds of urbanscape photo sessions that grounds my soul. Needless to say that the contre-jour perspective along 2000 meters of the back basin was a terrific opportunity for me. Last but not least, the old Gilles Villeneuve Circuit Start/Finish control tower was an impressive site, wrapped in meaning and history.

Eric : I think that when emotions get involved during a street photo session, you start seeing things you would otherwise overlook ; that's when you enter a special place in the creative process, a sort of communion with the current moment, when reality settles in front of your eyes. A that very moment, time stops and beauty waits to be captured.
